We adventurers are a curious, passionate breed, who sometimes take on more than we can chew.

Just ask one of our founding fathers, Leonardo Da Vinci.

He is widely regarded as one of the most talented painters in history, yet only about fifteen of his paintings have survived. Partially because he dappled with experimental techniques that haven’t stood the test of time. However, this is mostly due to his chronic procrastination habit.

Leonardo is known as the imminent Renaissance Man, because he was passionate about so many things. But his passions stopped him from getting as much done as he could have.

I recently asked the Sauce Posse, “What they were struggling with?” and despite the wide variety of answers, many said they were struggling with not having enough time.

Here is my video response with the key to time management for adventurers. Watch it now:

Never feel like there is enough time in a day?

Take action now by eliminating one unnecessary action from your daily life. Then add in one action to take a step in the direction of your dreams.

Do you have a secret to getting a lot done with your time? Please share with the other adventurers by clicking the small comments button below.

Hello from Amarillo, Texas!

I’m hitchhiking across the USA again, except this time is a little different. Not only am I making an epic, short video of my trip, but I’m also:

1. Shooting a documentary about my experience and the people I meet.

2. Teaching my girlfriend, Angela how to hitchhike.

3. Sharing photographs on Instagram.

We are have currently traveled 1,498 miles, walked over 30 miles, and hitched 15 rides in 11 days. We have also survived one cold, been through a snowstorm, been invited into 2 homes, been gifted 83$, and have met people, who:

***Design nuclear weapons

***Have figured out who is really in control of our world

***Will revolutionize the health care system

I’ll share more about the adventure soon, but here are 11 more of my favorite photographs of our journey so far.

My girlfriend, Angela and I just celebrate over a year of dating by making a crazy, 56 second video.

This is how we have fun… how do you celebrate your success?

Most people do boring things to celebrate… doesn’t it always seem like the same old thing.

Go out to dinner and get Hallmark greeting cards.

Screw that… go do something epic that you will never forget.

Go dance through the streets singing, We are the Champions.

Paint yourself green and stand in a forest for 10 hours.

Go travel to the place you have always wanted to go.

Go smootch your favorite person for 2 hours straight.

If you enjoyed our short photomotion video, please share it with your friends who would dig it as well.

I regularly ask myself,

Am I moving forwards or backwards?

If you are slacking on your goals, overwhelmed by your goals, or are waiting to start on your huge dreams one day in the future, maybe this post is for you.

I’ve analyzed what helps me stay moving forward, whether I’m planning a new travel adventure or starting my own micro-business.

Watch this 100 second film to know exactly why this inspired me (it usually takes people a few minutes to get it):

I want to change the world in a huge way.

I respect the people who say,

If I change one life, I’ll be happy.

This just isn’t me.

I’ve already changed hundreds of at-risk teen’s lives working one-on-one with them in the lush, Virginian forests.

I also made a video that 100,000 people watched in less than a week, which led to a flood of inspired emails.

One girl told me since she had watched my video she had saved 700$ towards traveling the world. Another was so frustrated with her options for a career, she googled, homeless and happy, and guess who she found… She is now inspired to find her passion in life.

I’m only just starting though… I want to move millions of people.

Hard Truth: No one really cares about my dreams and no one really cares about your dreams.

We have to go make our dreams happen for ourselves.

Are you ready for the most rewarding challenge of your life?

***

Here is what I need to turn my dreams into reality:

1. Limit myself to less than 3 concrete goals at once.

2. Be accountable to others (this is why I’m telling you).

3. Regular assessment of my goals.

4. Rewards when I rock it.

I have a lot of ambitions, but for this phase of my life I’m only working on three priorities:

1. Grow this blog, until it is my primary source of income.

2. Deepen my connection with my girlfriend, Angela.

3. Make award-winning videos that millions watch.

Within each of these priorities, I’ve set up concrete goals:

1. My Blog: By January 1, 2013, I will be making 100$ a day from Adventure Sauce.

2. Angela: My goals with Angela are private…

3. My Videography: By January 1, 2013, I will have won an award from at least one festival for my documentary AND I will have a viral video on Youtube and Vimeo (with at least one million views in a week).

For some people, 3 is too many to pursue at once. They do better going after one thing at a time and maybe this is you.

I’ve found 3 is my sweet spot.

Do you want to stop overwhelming yourself with too many ambitions and make measurable progress toward 3 of your biggest dreams?

Great… Here is what works for me, feel free to tailor this process to what works best for you:

1. Write a list of your priorities

My list had the above 3 goals and also other things I care about, like deepening my connections with my family and friends, making new rockstar friends, eating healthy, learning yoga, meditating daily, living in San Francisco, New Orleans, Brooklyn, Paris, and anywhere else in the world that I feel like it.

Write down anything you care about now.

2. Narrow this list to your 3 main priorities

Time to make hard decisions. Be ruthless and decide what your 3 main priorities are for the next 6 months to a year.

Crossing my family off was painful, but I realize this doesn’t mean I don’t love them. I just can’t focus on everything at once.

Important: This isn’t forever. When I’ve made significant progress on one of these goals, then I’ll add in my other priorities.

Make the hard decisions now.

3. Set up goals

Your goals must be measurable, concrete, and have an end date.

Making 100$ a day is concrete and measurable, but saying I will make a living from my blog is not.

Winning an award at a film festival is measurable, but saying I will be the best filmmaker ever is not.

Extra Sauce: Shoot for the moon on these goals too.

Aim where you don’t actually believe you can go (ps. I don’t actually believe I’m going to make 100$ a day. I’m not sure how I will do it. I still kinda think at any point I’m going to be a homeless dude, smoking crack to avoid the pain of my failure… but I push on anyways).

4. Tell people about your goals

Tell everyone you can about your goals. Write it on your blog. Stand on a building downtown and scream it at strangers as they pass.

Let everyone know you are going to rock it.

5. Zone out when the dream killers talk

Many people will not be happy with your dreams, because they aren’t going after their own dreams. They will sabotage you and tell you why you will fail.

They will tell you the one story they know about someone who went after their dreams, but is now flipping burgers for life.

Fuck them… Zone out.

I just say, “Uh huh… uh huh…. yeah… oh really…” and think about how awesome it is going to feel when I accomplish my dreams. When I notice they have stopped talking, I come back to life and usually talk to someone else.

Don’t try to convince them, just go do what you have to do.

6. Smootch the people that support you

These people are your people. Be so damn good to them, because if they support you on your crazy dreams, then they really love you. Give these people your love back and give them huge, wet smootches.

Go have a fat, bubby IPA with them. No have 3 IPA’s. Fuck it… go have 10!

Celebrate that you are now going after your dreams.

7. Now get your ass to work

Sure, you are hungover from the 26 IPA’s you had last night and have bruises from dancing on table tops. I don’t care.

Now you have to get to work.

This is the most important step in this whole process. Steps 1 through 6 are easy compared to this step.

Do one thing towards your goal today. No excuses, no waiting untill tomorrow.

There is no fucking tomorrow. There is only today.

If you don’t work now, you never will, and you will have to tell everyone that your word is worthless.

Do one thing today.

8. Get your ass to work today and every day for the rest of your life.

This is really the most important step.

For the next year or for the next 5 years or maybe for the rest of your life, you will have to get up every day and work for your dreams.

Sure you get to take mini-retirements. Sure you love your work, so working 84 hours a week (my schedule for the last month) isn’t sucking your soul away from you.

But going after your dreams ain’t easy either.

For me though, it is the only way I can live.

***

Final question:

Are you moving forwards or backwards?

If you enjoyed this post, please share it with your friends who have big dreams like you and I. They probably need it.

Also, if you ever need any help on your dreams, write me on Twitter or in the comments. I respond to everyone with my true self.

A couple days ago, I started hitchhiking across the USA again. My girlfriend and I are shooting a sequel to my Hitchhiking Stop Motion video, making a documentary, and doing random acts of kindess as we cross. If you want to be a part of my next video or maybe you live along the Southern USA and want to meet up. Send me an email now or follow the trip on Twitter.

Recently a reader asked me to help them brainstorm how to plan an epic travel trip.

I remember having all sorts of problems coming up with interesting stuff to do in my travels at first, so I’m hoping this will help you plan your own trip (if you have your own specific questions though, send me at email any time… maybe I’ll post a detailed response here).

This post is for anyone who wants to plan an epic trip, but isn’t quite sure where to begin. If you are a seasoned traveler, you can skip this one and go do some jumping jacks (for flexibility, of course).

Meet Alfred

Alfred has a job without much ‘human interaction or sunlight’ and he has a month before he dives into grad school. He’d love to go on an adventure first, but isn’t sure where to start. His ideal adventure would combine some of the following:

(1) Opportunity to continue to make a little income, even if it’s very little, every bit counts.
(2) Opportunity to acquire skills (e.g., how to fix a car, scuba diving, new language, new dance, whatever).
(3) Something likely to yield good stories.

Does your situation sound similar to Alfred’s?
Or do you just need help planning that first epic adventure?

Here are 7 steps to getting started planning your own adventure:

1. What do you love?

When planning an adventure, ask yourself one main question,

What do I really love?

Adventure can be really fun, but it also can propel you a little further toward your dreams. Going on an epic adventure could even help your career.

But it will take a little planning to sync your goals and passions up with a travel adventure.

2. Write a list of everything you love

Maybe you are a foodie and love eating tasty treats. Maybe you love your family and would enjoy knowing more about your heritage. Or maybe you love cars and you want to get your hands dirty with them.

With enough creativity, anything you love can be at the center of an epic adventure.

3. Choose one

Many people make the mistake of doing to much on their adventure. They overextend themselves and end up exhausted. Plus, they never really get to dive into anything, because they are dabbling in too many things. If you just choose one thing to focus on, you will get a lot out of your trip.

You probably won’t die tomorrow, so don’t worry about choosing your favorite thing. Just choose a passion that sounds fascinating… right now.

4. Design your trip

I’m going to put the ball in your court now and let you choose the place, mode of transportation, and your lodging based on your passion.

5. Some examples of types of trips:
-Go learn about the history pizza in Italy (or America)
-Learn to work on automobile engines by heading to Detroit
-Learn a language somewhere by speaking with the locals
-Visit your ancestors
-Arrange a homestay
-Volunteer on an organic farm
-Walk a long distance to meet a lot of people
-Take a moped to your destination and take the slow
-Learn to sail by volunteering on a boat
-Learn to talk to anyone by hitchhiking the country
-Learn about plants by going to camp in them
-Get healthy by heading into the mountains and hiking daily
-Research India Pale Ales by heading to Colorado or Seattle and tasting them all for yourself
-Learn to surf by camping on the beach in the Baja

Extra Sauce: Tours can be very helpful for some, but aren’t necessary. There are plenty of adventures that won’t cost you a penny.

6. How could you make money from an adventure?

If you want to make some side income from your travels, you need to think of two things:

1. What skills and talents do you already have?
2. What are people willing to pay for?

Freelancing or writing web content is a good way to start.

Also, keep your eyes open as your travel and jump at any opportunity that comes your way. Be sure to tell people that you are looking to make money.

7. How could you get some great stories?

Danger always makes for great stories. Just don’t go do something stupid, because I told you too.

In many cases, danger is overhyped by the media or by scared people. Many places aren’t as dangerous as people will have you believe.

However, I just returned from a month of cheap living and fish tacos in the Baja Peninsula. My beautiful, blond girlfriend and I just walked across the border of Tijuana and caught buses with the local people.

The only time I felt unsafe in the Baja was, when I enjoyed a sunset a little too long on a hill top and had to scramble down the trail-less side in the dark.

Of course as I was reading online about traveling in Mexico, everyone is screaming how tourists are going to get their head cut off. Please… go do what you love.

If danger isn’t your thing, do something you are passionate about. You could tell a great story about mud, if you love it, and learn interesting things about it.
